The Uniswap protocol is a peer-to-peer system for swapping [Ethereum](/coins/eth) blockchain coins (ERC-20 Tokens).
The protocol is constructed as a series of persistent, non-upgradable smart contracts to prioritise censorship resistance, security, and self-custody while operating without trusted intermediaries who may selectively restrict access.

The Uniswap protocol comes in three versions; V1, V2, and V3. V1 and V2 are free sources and GPL-licensed. V3 is open source with minor changes. Once deployed, each version of Uniswap will function in perpetuity, with 100% uptime, as long as the Ethereum blockchain exists.

## How Does Uniswap Work?

Hayden Adams invented the Uniswap protocol in 2018. However, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin was the first to outline the underlying technology that motivated its implementation.

Uniswap employs a mechanism in which liquidity suppliers create liquidity pools. This system offers a decentralised pricing mechanism that effectively smoothes out order book depth. Users can smoothly switch between ERC-20 tokens without using an order book.

There is no listing process because the Uniswap protocol is decentralised. Essentially, any ERC-20 coin can be created if traders have access to a liquidity pool. As a result, Uniswap does not impose listing fees. In some ways, the Uniswap protocol serves the public good.

With no order book, Uniswap departs from the typical architecture of digital exchange. It employs the Constant Product Market Maker design, a version of the Automated Market Maker model (AMM).
Smart contracts that retain liquidity reserves (or liquidity pools) that traders can trade against are automated market makers. Liquidity providers fund these reserves. By depositing the equivalent of two tokens in the pool, anyone can become a liquidity provider. The fees that traders pay into the pool are divided among liquidity providers based on their pool share.

By depositing the equivalent of two tokens, liquidity providers create a market. These can be ETH plus an ERC-20 token or two ERC-20 tokens. These pools are typically made up of stablecoins like DAI, USDC, or USDT; however, this is not required. In exchange, liquidity providers receive "liquidity tokens," which reflect their portion of the overall liquidity pool. The tokens can be redeemed for the pool share they represent.

The current Uniswap price is USD 6.16, and the 24-hour trading volume is USD 426,955,190. In the last 24 hours, Uniswap has gone down 12.64%. CoinMarketCap now ranks #26, with a live market cap of USD 4,253,407,467. There are 690,676,383 UNI coins in circulation, with a maximum supply of 1,000,000,000 coins.

## Uniswap Price Prediction

PricePrediction.net predicts a moderate short-term rise with a target of USD 13.02 by the end of 2022 and a target of USD 19.10 in 2023. According to the website, the currency will reach USD 40 in 2025 and remain there for the remainder of the year.

DigitalCoinPrice's UNI coin price estimate for 2022 is significantly more conservative, with a UNI coin price prediction of USD 12.19. The coin is anticipated to reach USD 14.27 in one year and USD 31.14 in five years. The UNI coin price estimate for 2025 is USD 18.02 on average.

## Final Thought: Is Uniswap a Promising Investment?

For a good reason, decentralised finance tokens are among the most touted assets in the cryptocurrency industry today. Investors believe DeFi will be a substitute for those who do not have access to banks. DeFi platforms are also incredibly efficient. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people are employed by traditional banks and exchanges. In contrast, DeFi needs a few individuals to do the same role because smart contracts handle much of the work autonomously.

Uniswap could be a good addition to your portfolio if you believe in decentralised finance. Not only is it the most liquid decentralised exchange, but Uniswap's V3 upgrade increases the liquidity of Bitcoin on the site.

While other DEXs might use Uniswap's earlier upgrades, its V3 update is secured for two years, giving Uniswap a strong competitive advantage over other decentralised exchanges.

Hopes of seeing Bitcoin achieve a year-end price level of $100,000 were dashed in only moments when monetary policy rumours and speculation about the new Covid-19 variant, Omicron, sent tremors through the cryptocurrency marketplace.

The world’s original cryptocurrency suddenly lost more than 18% in value, dropping to as low as $42,875…_all within the span of a single hour_.  As the new week begins, Bitcoin has already recovered some of that value back, creeping just above $50,000.  But, still well below the $55,000 - $59,000 price range the digital coin traded in the week prior to the crash.

Don’t act surprised.  Experiencing a 30-40% price fluctuation within a single month is something to be expected as the cryptocurrency market continues to mature.

## Buy The Dip- Opportunity?

Following closely behind Bitcoin, the world's _second-_largest cryptocurrency by market capitalisation, [Ethereum](/coins/eth), declined to $3,525 per coin – the digital asset’s lowest price in a month, though it has since recovered some of the lost value. 

There are investors among us who have waited patiently for this opportunity.  The more experienced crypto-investors among us are seeing a familiar pattern – a significant and sudden market decline “washes out” the crypto-newbies who’ve been playing the cryptocurrency market like a casino, and while those players are making for the hills, the more prudent among us view the market carnage as a buying opportunity.

Even if we take Saturday’s precipitous drop into consideration, Bitcoin was trading just over $29,000 when 2021 began so it is still up over 65% on the year.  Lately, we seem to have been standing on the edge of what many would consider “mainstream adoption” of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum.  But those aren’t the only two “would be” buying opportunities right now.

Last weekend’s sell-off affected other altcoins that had been riding a trend of popularity in 2021, making such affected digital assets no less enticing in terms of “buying the dip.”  [Polkadot](https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/polkadot-new/), which trades under the symbol DOT, looks especially appealing right now.  The digital asset lost nearly 10% of its value in the first 24 hours of the sell-off, but most suspect the decline had come as a result of the broader market sell-off.

At present, Polkadot is showing signs of recovery which would suggest strong investor support for this suddenly popular digital asset.  Polkadot has evolved to find a place on the list of the top-ten largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation, we assume for a reason.  Investors looking for solid projects to invest in that demonstrate future potential might have a reason to consider Polkadot right now.  Like, _right_ now…

Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) technology and cryptocurrencies like [Ripple](/coins/xrp) are bound to make cross-border transactions easier. ## Uniswap Labs has recruited respected former Washington operative Hari Sevugan.

The appointment of the former senior spokesman for President Barack Obama comes amid efforts to define a regulatory strategy for crypto in the US capital.

Sevugan joins Uniswap Labs, the largest exchange in decentralised finance (DeFi) and creators of uniswap (UNI), as communications chief.

He will manage public-facing communications for the developer behind Uniswap UNI, which, according to a spokesperson quoted by CoinDesk, will include ‘helping the company tell its story to existing users and new audiences and managing media affairs’.

## Sevugan Has Tech Experience

Sevugan brings an impressive CV, including serving as Obama’s senior spokesperson for the 2008 presidential campaign, the deputy campaign manager for brand and media for former Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s 2020 presidential campaign, and the national press secretary for the Democratic National Committee. 

CoinDesk quoted Sevugan as saying he also had some tech experience, having ‘worked with several tech companies and with founders at a political-tech incubator’.

## Crypto is Seen Through 'Lens of Value'

It goes on to quote him as saying: ‘Politics, when done right, is also about taking complex issues of policy and making them understandable to everyone so everyone feels a sense of ownership over those decisions. Crypto is opaque and intimidating to many outside of it. I want to help more people connect to it by making it more relatable and understandable.’

‘One of the fundamental challenges, by virtue of what makes headlines, is that crypto is seen only through the lens of value, and not values.’

This is the latest executive level hire by Uniswap Labs, following the appointment of Mary-Catherine Lader as chief operating officer.
